Snow has long been regarded as a harbinger of a bountiful harvest, and thus, snowflake patterns have been used as symbols of good fortune since ancient times.

During the Edo period, snow began to be depicted as circular flowers with six petals, known as "Yukiwa".

Later in the late Edo period, the trend of depicting snow as crystalline shapes, known as "Sekkamon" , became popular.
