Gourds were believed to bring good fortune and prosperity in business as they bear fruit abundantly.  Since they are also filled with seeds, they are also considered a symbol of prosperity of offspring.

"Mubyō" also carries the meaning of "no disease," thus it is associated with the meaning of "good health".
