Collection: KOMARUYA SUMII

The history of KOMARUYA SUMII is estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, and has been passed down through oral tradition from generation to generation.
The Sumii family, then a noble family, was ordered by the emperor of the time to make fans using madake bamboo from Fushimi Fukakusa,

The people of Fukakusa were mobilized and "Fukakusa Uchiwa" was established during the Tensho period (1573-92).

In the Edo period (1603-1868), the fan and fan culture flourished, and this "Fukakusa Uchiwa" from Fushimi, Kyoto, became famous throughout Japan.

There are records of many fans in use from that time, including the "Motomasa-type Fukakusa Uchiwa" invented by Motomasa Shonin, founder of Zuikoji Temple, who was a fellow poet with the Sumii family.

Later, the company also began handling dancing fans, summer fans, and tenugui hand towels, and "Kyomaru Uchiwa" with the names of geiko and maiko from the Kyoto Five Flower Streets appeared on the market.

In addition, the company had a deep knowledge of the arts for generations and owned many kazuras, costumes, and props for Japanese dance,

After the war, he started "Komaruya Kogutsu Ten" and his name spread throughout the country, and the fan culture, which had been declining with the passage of time, has been preserved to this day.

Today, we are in charge of fans and stage props for "Kitano Odori", "Miyako Odori", "Kyo Odori", and "Kamogawa Odori", all of which are spring festivals in Kyoto, as well as props for dance performances by masters of various schools throughout Japan,

I am also in charge of props for dance performances by masters of various schools throughout Japan, as well as kyogen and tsukeuchi, and continue to support the stage as a behind-the-scenes performer. We continue to support the stage as a backstage operator, passing on to the next generation what we have inherited from our predecessors, while transmitting Kyoto's culture to the world.
